Professor of Playwriting

Lucienne Guedes Fahrer is a playwright, actor, director, professor, and researcher. She received her first degree from the University of São Paulo (USP) in Theatre with a specialization in Theory of the Theatre (2000) and her Master’s in Theatre (2011), also from USP. As an invited artist for the Teatro de Narradores, Cia., she put on her production of CIDADE CORO – CIDADE FIM – CIDADE REVERSO, as both playwright and co-driector. This production represented Brazil in the Messe Frankfurt in Germany in 2013. She was also an invited actor for Cia. Balagan (under the direction of Maria Thaís Lima Santos) in the project Cabras in 2013. She was a founding actress of Teatro da Vertigem, with whom she has put on the productions O Paraíso Perdido (1992), Apocalipse 1,11 (2000), e A última palavra é a penúltima 2.0 (2014). In 1998 she was invited to be principal of the Free School of Theatre in Santo André. She was an invited professor of the Theatre Department of ECA-USP in 2009, 2010, and 2013 and an invited director for the School of Dramatic Arts at USP in 2014. She is professor of playwriting at the Escola Superior de Artes Celia Helena em São Paulo. She has a wide range of experience in the arts, with an emphasis in playwriting and acting/directing, workign principally in the following areas: the creation process, playwriting, theatrical interpretation, the collaborative process, body techniques, vocal techniques, and performance. Currently she is working on her doctorate at USP under the direction of Sílvia Fernandes (beginning in 2012), with her work focusing on the creative processes in playwriting.

Sarah Campbell received her B.A. in Theatre from the University of Kentucky in Lexington, Kentucky and her M.A. in Theatre with an emphasis in Directing from the University of Nebraska Omaha. Her research interests include the phenomenological study of performance, the contemporary re-staging of Restoration texts, and Maya ritual performance in the Classic period. She is currently Vice President and conference co-chair for IU’s Association for Research in Theatre (ART@IU). Sarah is from Louisville, Kentucky.

Miriam Poole
Miriam received her B.A. in Theatre and German from Hillsdale College in Hillsdale, Michigan and her M.A. in Theatre HIstory, Theory, and Literature from Indiana University. Her research interests include medieval theatre, German romanticism, and the theatrical activities of the Irish Literary Revival. Miriam is from West Chicago, Illinois.

Justin Rincker
Justin received both his B.A. in Anthropology and English Literature and his M.A. in Drama from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. His research interests include the combined work of Tadashi Suzuki and Anne Bogart and the history of movement on the stage, especially in comic performance. Justin’s directing and performance credits include productions with Metro Theatre Company, New Jewish Theatre, OnSite Theatre Company, Dramatic License Productions, and HotCity Theatre, all in St. Louis.

Michael Rodriguez Mike received his B.A. in Cinema and Drama from San Francisco State University in San Francisco, California. Before coming to IU, he worked as an actor, a tour guide in Paris, and an ESL teacher. His current research project includes a critical look at American stage productions depicting slavery during the late eighteenth century. Mike also works for the Telluride Film Festival as the Alumni Coordinator of the Student Symposium.

In art there are no rules.

I consider myself equal parts director and actor. Had you asked the freshman Juliet, my outlook would have been drastically different. And now I look back and the journey has been nothing that I expected and everything that I wanted.

At the beginning of this year I wanted a capstone project that would combine all of the methods, styles, and life lessons from my undergrad career. This search ultimately lead to the creation of my senior Honors Thesis: producing and directing Picasso’s Women by Brian McAvera. I planned this project in order to challenge my own artistic process and to create a common ground for artists on campus who wouldn’t regularly have the opportunity to meet. Neal Utterback Defends Dissertation: “Stagehands: Gestures and the Embodied Actor”

Many congratulations to Dr. Neal Allen Utterback who today earned his Ph.D. from the Indiana University Department of Theatre & Drama upon defending his dissertation titled “Stagehands: Gestures and the Embodied Actor,” an exploration of how cognitive science can explains actors’ use of gestures to memorize lines, disambiguate language, and expand meaning.

Before coming to IU, Neal received his B.A. in Theatre from Coastal Carolina University in Conway, South Carolina, and his M.F.A. in acting from University of Florida in Gainesville. A playwright and theatre-maker, Neal’s play second is published in NYTE’s Plays and Playwrights 2005. His newest play, American Western, has been invited to premiere at the International Dublin Gay Theatre Festival in 2013 where Neal was previously nominated for both Outstanding Production and Outstanding New Writing for his 2009 adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s The Picture (of Dorian Gray).

In 2012, Neal accepted a tenure-track position at Juniata College in Huntington, Pennsylvania where he serves as Associate Professor of Theatre.

CMCL’s Joshua Trey Barnett is the (corpo)realities Symposium Essay Prize Winner

We are pleased to announce that Joshua Trey Barnett, MA Student in Indiana University’s Department of Communication & Culture is the winner of the  2013 Indiana University Graduate Symposium on Theatre & Performance Studies Essay Prize. His paper “Photographic Sequences of Transsexual Bodies as Performance” investigated Joshua Riverdale’s “Gender Outlaw: My Physical Evolution on Testosterone,” a 110- photograph sequence of the photographer’s body in various states of somatic transition.

In his paper presented at the 2013 (corpo)realities conference sponsored by ART@IU, Joshua demonstrates the productive potential of consecutive images to render the prolonged process of transition visible. According to Joshua:

“Riverdale’s photographic sequence straddles the divide between embodied performance and archival documentation, and functions to perform his transition in a coherent way that relies on and refers to the corporeal. This analysis offers a generative framework for re-imagining the relationships between visual rhetoric and performance, representation and performativity, image and flesh.”

The prize comes with recognition in Department of Theatre and Drama’s various publications and a $200 stipend sponsored by the Indiana University Department of Theatre & Drama and ART@IU.

IU CMCL Student, Joshua Trey Barnett

Joshua Trey Barnett is an associate instructor and graduate student in the Department of Communication and Culture at Indiana University Bloomington. His research program centers on questions of (in)visibility with an emphasis on queer and environmental visual rhetorics. Invisible processes such as climate change, community pollution, and somatic transitions constitute the primary sites of Barnett’s research and attention. He theorizes at the intersections of rhetorical, performance, and critical cultural studies. He is also a photographer and queer activist.

In November, second-year PhD student Eric “C” Heaps will be presenting the world premiere of Refusing the Flower (A recusa da flor) by Lucienne Guedes Fahrer, a playwright, director, actor, and theatre artist from São Paulo, Brazil.

“I first met Lucienne last year at an event titled Dramaturgia Concisa e Contemporânea (Concise and Contemporary Playwriting), where playwrights have 90 minutes to write a 5-10 minute scene which will be performed that night; Lucienne was the winner that night. The following week I attended her play Banda Hamlet, a rock show where the characters from Hamlet come back from the dead to retell their stories using popular music. I was hooked from that point. And since even award-winning contemporary playwrights from Brazil are unfortunately unknown in the United States, I decided to bring one of her plays to you.”

A founding member of Teatro da Vertigem (Vertigo Theatre), as well as a member of Cia. dos Dramaturgos (Company of Playwrights), Fahrer has been principal at the Free School of Theatre in Santo André and a resident-artist at the São Paulo School of Theatre. In addition to her career as a professional artist, she is now pursing a doctoral degree from the University of São Paulo.

It is an interesting turn of events that the first fully staged production of Refusing the Flower should be in English rather than Portuguese. The play’s translation and eventual production served as a practice as research project for Eric who plans to pursue translation theory in his dissertation next year. In part, Refusing the Flower’s American premiere asked questions key to Eric’s research about how meaning is transmitted when both actors and spectators are working in a language that they have no prior experience with:

“The history of translation is marked by a pendulum swing of public opinion regarding its validity as a practice. Romans translated and adapted Greek theatre, believing that by putting it into Latin they improved it. Later, early translations of the Bible into languages other than Latin brought people to the stake to be burned. But whatever the opinion towards translation’s viability, we often take translation for granted in the theatre world. Partially in order to combat this tendency, and also to demonstrate the validity of bilingualism in American theatre, for this production I’ve maintained some of the Portuguese in the script. By so doing, I hope to further various dramatic functions of the script and provide something more meaningful than would be provided by either language alone.”

Eric collaborated with Fahrer on on the final draft of his translation and plans to film the project in the hopes that the piece might continue to be developed both in the US and Brazil. The production features IU students and community members, most of whom are making their premiere on IU stages as well.
